Our Gingerbread House

I like traditions. One of my holiday traditions is to make a gingerbread house. Its not the most original tradition, as its followed by many people, but its something that I try and make sure I do every year at this time.

So we got the kit out on the weekend.  Our front and back pieces were broken in the package, but we glued them together with some icing. Our first attempt to assemble failed, when one of the sides fell in while we were putting the roof on. So this is the second attempt, this time I'm waiting for it to dry a little before adding the weight of the roof.

The finished product. We each took a side to decorated. We got a little mixed up, because that is the roof I did, but Darryl decorated that side wall.

It turned out pretty good. And there was even left over candy, even though I was eating all the little coloured balls as we worked.

Wow, the messiness of the bottom window is really bugging me. I think I have a problem. I should probably just eat that wall so I don't have to look at it any more.

How I Decorate my Tree

I love Chirstmas, its always been my favourtite holiday. When I was a kid (and when I was older too) I would sit under the tree for hours trying to guess what was in all my presents. If my parents weren't home my sister and I would get out a pair of scissors and tape, and try to open the corners of our presents to peek and see what was inside. I didn't really want to ruin the surprise, I just wanted a little hint. I did eventually get caught and my parents never put our presents under the tree early again. That ruined a little of the fun for me. Sneaking around looking for our gifts and trying to sneak clues about what was inside the wrapped ones, was half the fun.

This year its been harder to get into the Christmas spirit. The weather has been very mild, and there is very little chance that we will get snow.  I sput up my tree up around December 1st like I do every year.

First step is the lights. We have a pre-lit tree, but only the top half lights up. So last year we got the netting lights. They are so much easier to put on because you don't have to untangle a long string.

I try and switch up how I do the ribbon a little each time. Last year did the ribbons in diamond pattern. This year I went more simple, and put them on a slight angle. I have 3 rolls of the ribbon. At the top it wraps all the way around the tree but as the tree got thicker I only put it in the front.

Most of my decorations are red and white. I like a nice colour theme. It makes everything look more polished. I got a got the balls in a big pack from Canadian Tire a few years ago. There are even more in the box then I put on the tree this time.

Hope everyone has been getting all their shopping done early. Only one more weekend after this. We bought a gingerbread house today that we will be assembling soon. I will post pictures when we are done.
